La Gratitude, Hermanus Beach House

La Gratitude, Hermanus – sleeps up to 12

Designed by Herbert Baker, La Gratitude has been the Pickstone family’s Hermanus-based holiday home for about a century. Designed in 1916 and built on a property chosen for its magnificent views of Walker Bay, dramatic backdrop of the Oliphantsberg Mountains, and its proximity to the vast Grotto Beach, La Gratitude is filled with nostalgia of bygone days and contains a well of memories from past summers.

Renovations have brought this Cape Dutch home firmly into the 21st Century with a pool and private jacuzzi, while still maintaining its sense of history. It is the perfect family party house of generous proportions, which can sleep up to ten guests and boasts a large garden and outdoor barbeque area. Drop down to the beach barefoot or watch whales from the sunloungers while remaining in splendid seclusion within the 3000 square meters of gently sloping lawns and indigenous vegetation.

Bedrooms at La Gratitude

La Gratitude has 6 bedrooms: 3 x king, 3 x twin.
The first bedroom is found on the seaward side of the house, so you can fall asleep to the rhythm of the ocean in the king-sized bed. It also has a fireplace. The adjacent second bedroom is made up with twin beds and opens up onto the courtyard garden. These two bedrooms share a refurbished bathroom.

Another bedroom with king-sized bed can be found at the rear of the house with entrance through the courtyard, with soaring views back onto the mountains, and across the rolling grass towards the lagoon and the beach. This bedroom has a delightful ensuite bathroom that has been modernized with blue tiles and a clean finish. The final downstairs room is a twin room, also accessed through the courtyard that looks onto the lawn, pool deck, braai area and jacuzzi. It also has a remodelled blue and white ensuite bathroom.

Upstairs is a family-style suite with two, inter-leading rooms with twin beds in the open room and a double bed in the enclosed room. It has a separate bathroom and shower. Accessed from the kitchen these rooms are ideal for teenagers, or older children as they also boast their own entertainment section: a small sitting room with TV and DVD player.

Living and dining at La Gratitude

The open-plan kitchen-dining room has bright downlights, wooden worktops and white wooden storage units. There’s enough equipment for the most adventurous of cooks: two fridges, an oven with gas hob, a twin sink and a dishwasher. The breakfast table for six looks through large windows onto the pool deck and barbeque area. The adjoining dining room’s antique table comfortably seats 14 and impressive views out to sea. It also opens though a stable door onto the pool and deck.

The sunny lunchtimes and warm evenings can be spent by the built-in barbeque (braai) under a shady area by the pool. Fresh fish can be bought at the harbour, and other provisions at Hermanus’ well-stocked shops and supermarkets (a short drive), you can also pre-order shopping through the owners and if required, the housekeeper, Iris, can help prepare meals, or you can enlist a chef to come to the house – a real luxury for those special celebratory meals.

The living room is the comfortable hub of the house with a central open fireplace and satellite / DSTV television. There are comfy sofas and chairs and an antique desk. It opens up onto the front, thatch-covered veranda, with chairs a table and a sofa. The perfect retreat to watch the sun go down, with a glass of wine over Walker Bay.
