Explorers Club, Franschhoek village

Explorers Club, Franschhoek – sleeps up to 6 adults and 4 children

As the flagship property in the Explorers Club’s special and unique collection of places to stay, the Explorers Club has been designed with adventure in mind. Life at the Explorers Club revolves around the vast open-plan kitchen, living, dining area and enclosed veranda, with doors that pull back and open out onto a huge pool and garden with mountain views.

The four ensuite bedrooms (three ensuite bedrooms, one twin loft room) lead off from this central area, with a twin room tucked ingeniously into the eaves of the original building, together sleeping up to 6 adults and 4 children (and a toddler – in a camp cot).

Built on the spot where the original railway ticket office stood in the centre of Franschhoek village, the Explorers Club, through its eclectic Africana décor, retains the atmosphere of the eternal traveller, perfectly captured by Jo Sinfield’s sentiment: “Somewhere inside all of us lurks an adventurous impulse, large or small. We hope you find it here. Start planning an escapade, tremble over a few precipices, and mull over an idea or two with glass in hand…all in the comfort of the Explorers Club.”

Bedrooms at Explorers Club

Explorers Club has 4 bedrooms: 1x king bed, 1 x queen bed, 1x bunk and single and 1 x king or twin.
The master bedroom’s king-sized bed faces a large wood-burning open fireplace, with double doors opening out onto a private wooden-pole covered veranda, the pool and garden. A ceiling fan above the king-sized bed will keep you cool, while, underfloor heating will ease you through the cooler winter months. Attached is a walk-through dressing room (also ideal for a baby or toddler in a camp cot) leading to a large bathroom with bath, shower, loo and double basins.

The second bedroom has a queen-sized bed, ceiling fan and ensuite shower room, washbasin and loo. While the third bunk bedroom can be used for children or small adults. It also has an ensuite bathroom with a bath, washbasin and loo.

Up some narrow stairs, set in the sky-lit eaves of the old cottage is the fourth bedroom. The twin beds (which can be made up into a king-size) lie beneath a large skylight and ceiling fan – leave the skylight open and watch the skies at night as you lie in bed. With an open-plan bathroom concept, there is a bath beneath a large side-window and glorious views, and a washbasin in the room.

Living and dining at Explorers Club

The soul of Explorers Club lies in the large open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, giving the conviviality of a camp kitchen, gorging area and place to relax, but with all the creature comforts a true holiday requires. The living area is divided into two sofa areas: one of which opens out on to the patio, the other remains in the cosy interior, adjacent to an open fireplace, and beneath a wall-mounted, flatscreen TV. With air-conditioning, DStv, Wifi and a collection of classic DVDs to hand, there’s plenty to inspire you to start dreaming about your next expedition.

The fully-equipped open-plan kitchen and island has three ovens, two hobs (one gas and one electric) and is equipped with serious cooks in mind. The indoor barbeque (braai) is incorporated into the open-plan concept and can be used year-round and in all weather. The intriguing dining table was custom designed around an old wagon wheel, and is perfectly positioned in the veranda area so that you can throw open the stacking doors to the garden and solar-heated pool in summer, for seemless indoor-outdoor living, or close them up against winter’s chill and rain.

Although primarily designed as a self-catering residence, Explorers Club can also be booked as an intimate lecture venture where visiting speakers can enthral guests with adventurous tales, cookery classes, or for small conference groups and cocktail parties.
