Tswalu is the largest privately owned game reserve in South Africa, perfect for a celebration, to explore 114,000 hectares of pristine Kalahari wilderness. The real luxury of staying here is flexibility with your own vehicle, guide and tracker, to access and explore one of the world’s last wild places with nobody else in sight. This can also be on foot or horseback.
Besides its famed Kalahari lions and myriad of mammals it is the smaller animals that shine, and are hard to find elsewhere: aardvarks, meerkats, caracals and pangolins, that have become the most prized to see. To these can be added more than 240 kinds of birds that roam the airways in these vast open spaces and beautiful landscapes.
It links in seamlessly through Cape Town, with a direct flight from a private hangar, and in the summer offers the spectacle of seeing the Kalahari when it is green and there is no Malaria, offering a three-night safari break an easy add on to your Western Cape adventure.
The Homestead
Recently redesigned to uncompromising standards of comfort and elegance, Tarkuni is an exceptional choice for families or groups of great friends. Its five luxurious suites, each with a magnificent en-suite bathroom, accommodate a maximum of 10 guests in total.
The homestead has its own dedicated team including a host and private chef to ensure meticulous and completely personal service. A private vehicle, personal field guide and tracker complete this bespoke safari experience.
Tarkuni’s quiet pool and shady salas offer calm and contemplation. Its own traditional boma has seen many celebrations, and its beguiling charm has led many guests to return to what becomes their home in the Kalahari.

Our favourite memory?
The direct charter flight from Cape Town touches down on the property, and you are transported into another world. The first connection to somewhere unique is the distinctive Kalahari red earth, and as you are welcomed by the guides you hear the chattering of the social weavers in their enormous nest, built under the thatched arrival area. My favourite recollection is the 15 hours spent in splendid isolation at the sleep-out, on a deck, under a blanket of stars overlooking the rolling dunes and listening to the different calls of the animals and birds over the course of time…. and the bush shower as dawn arrives.
Most surprising fact?
Experiencing the wonder of the ‘Green Kalahari’. After some intense summer rains the bush comes alive with green grass, new shoots which triggers a spate of animals giving birth. A joyous spring feeling.
What we did while we were there?
Layer upon layer unravels over the time we spent there. It can be a highly concentrated safari experience and tailored to what you want to see…or you can simply enjoy the incredible sense of space, peace and quiet.
It is one of the best places to see Pangolin and Aardvark anywhere. The striking black-maned kalahari lions, Black and White rhino, cheetah, leopard, habituated meerkats, giraffe, buffalo, birds and a wide range of activities from game drives, walks, horse riding and sleep-outs. And some of the best safari food you will experience.
At the end of the day it is around the fire in the boma. It is a primeval bond everyone should experience, regularly.
